Assessment

In 2014, the government introduced a new National Curriculum. The old system of levels was also withdrawn. Schools are now expected to devise their own internal assessment systems; however, there are still statutory assessments at the end of Key Stage 1 (Year 2) and the end of Key Stage 2, in addition to a Phonics screening assessment at the end of Year 1.

At Midsomer Norton Primary School, we use assessment to:

  • Make judgments on a child's current attainment
  • Keep parents informed of their child's progress
  • And, most importantly, to identify the next step in a child's learning

Although for internal tracking we make summative 'teacher assessments', we do not tell a child their 'level'. At parent's evenings and in school reports we inform parents/carers whether their child is on track to meet the end of year expectations, is working on the year group expectations but is unlikely to fully meet the expectations or whether their child is working below the year group expectations.

For a fuller understanding of assessment please download our school assessment policy under the Policies and Procedures section.
