2014/15 News

20th July 2015 - Gold for Midsomer Norton Primary!

Following an application from us over the summer in 2015, we are pleased to announce that we have been awarded the Sainsbury's School Games GOLD Mark, to go with our SILVER Mark that we received in 2014. This award reflects many things to do with our PE provision in school, including:

  • The quantity of high-quality PE lessons our children receive each week;
  • The amount of children participating in extra-curricular sporting activity each week;
  • The support we provide for our talented young sports people and less active children;
  • The number of competitive events we take part in each year.

By receving the Gold award, it really does put us among the top schools in the country for the opportunities we provide in PE. We are very proud of this award and hope it can be used as a springboard to develop our PE teaching even more!

13th July 2015 - A Visit from the Rugby World Cup

Some of our children headed to Odd Down today to take part in the Rugby World Cup festival. They played some games of tag rugby against other schools, and even got to have a photo with the cup itself - what a great memory to have! We are all excited for the World Cup itself in September and can't wait for it to begin!

13th July 2015 - Anyone for Quidditch?!

Our Year 5s were transported into the magical school of Hogwarts today to try their hand at a game of Quidditch. Their aim was to try and get the quaffles (handballs) through the scoring rings without being hit by a bludger (dodgeball!) They also had to show nimble footwork to ensure that their rugby tag wasn't removed otherwise they would have to give up possession of the ball they were holding. The game was over when the Golden Snitch was caught by a team-member, earning their team 150pts.

It was a fantastic PE lesson where the group had to show tactical awareness, accurate passing, agility and balance, all whilst pretending to ride their own brromstick. Deiniftely one to try again in the future!

10th July 2015 - Sports Awards Evening

We held the inaugural 'MSN Primary Sports Awards Evening' today to celebrate the success we have had in sport from throughout the year. 8th July 2015 - Quadkids County Finals

Still smiling from the area win a few weeks ago, our Quadkids team travelled to Bath University today for the county finals. The day began with an impressive opening ceremony which included a variety of singing/dancing performances, as well as a visit from GB athlete Lesley Owusu. We even managed to sneak in for a quick picture!

After the opening ceremony, we made our way to the Quadkids location and got ready for action. We moved around as a team and cheered each other one to achieve as best as we could. After all four events we gathered round and awaited the results.

After an anxious wait, we found out that we came THIRD out of the entire West of England - a truly fantastic accomplishment and supports our claim as being one of the top primary sports teams in the county. The whole squad were tired, drained but most of all proud! Well done everyone! (Squad: Megan, Tianna, Evie C, Jamima, Evie T, Harrison, Charlie, Ioan, Lewis & Korey)

30th June 2015 - Sports' Day

In the blistering sunshine, we held our annual Sports' Day this week up on our school field. It was a fantastic day filled with track and field events for the children to rotate through.

For the House Cup in the afternoon, the competition was neck and neck going into the final relays. However, a late push by Phoenix saw them retain the House Cup over Aquila and claim the honours of Sports' Day Champions!

We hope everyone enjoyed the day and are looking forward to next year!

29th June 2015 - Athletics Champions!

Our athletic squad headed over to St Benedict's this week to compete in the MSN Association Quadkids Athletics event. We sent 20 children, split into two teams, to have a go at sprinting, running, throwing and jumping against some of the best schools in the area.

The squads showed great character and determination to do as well as possible, as well as cheering on and helping out other members of different school teams - something that we were extremely proud of.

As the results were announced, we were overwhelmed to finish in 1st position and be crowned area champions! This means we get a nice trophy to add to our collection but that we will also be going to Bath University next week to compete in the county finals. Well done everyone!

26th June 2015 - Greased Lightnin'!

We were extremely fortunate this week to have arranged a dance workshop from Norton Hill for our Year 5/6s. A group of dancers came over and showed off their fantastic dance routines from their upcoming performance of 'Grease' and then helped out the children in choreographing their own short routines to the music from the show.

All the children had a fantastic afternoon and would love them to visit again! Thank you Norton Hill!

25th June 2015 - Howzat!

Following on form our Year 5's 6th place finish at the county finals on Tuesday, our girls went over to Weston-super-Mare to challenge themselves against Somerset's finest. They started in fine form, winning all 4 of their group games to qualify for the final!

In the final, the team were pitted against St Stephens, the team that knocked us out of the B&NES event a few weeks ago. This time the game was far closer but St Stephens still came out on top.

Well done to them and a huge well done to our girls - 2nd out of the whole of Somerset!

23rd June 2015 - A Trip to the County Finals for Year 5

After reaching the final of the B&NES event a few weeks ago, our Year 5s headed over to Keynsham to take on the county's finest.

Before the tournament, our team were thrilled to receive a message from England cricketer James Taylor, who personally wished them good luck. What a nice guy!

Despite suffering an opening game loss, the team bounced back with 2 straight wins that meant they ended up finishing in 6th place (out of the whole of Somerset), which we are obviously delighted with. Well done everyone - you did us proud!

16th June 2015 - Year 6 Kwik Cricket

16 of our Year 6s made their way to Bath today to compete in the B&NES Year 6 Kwik Cricket against 22 other teams. This was an opportunity to put into practice what they have learnt in their PE lessons and they all performed admirably.

They didn't quite make the knock-out stages, but did their school proud nonetheless. Well done everyone!

8th June 2015 - Girls Kwik Cricket

After 2 washed out attempts, our girls finally got the chance to compete in the Girls Kwik Cricket event at Bath Cricket Club today.

Our Year 5 team did a great job in their group, beating St Mary's B but sadly missing out to a mightily impressive St Stephens A team. All the girls did fantastically well especially Evie C who managed to hit a whopping 37 runs in just 10 balls!

Our Year 6 team managed to win both their group games to reach the semi-finals where they played St Stephens (the conquerers of our Year 5 team!) Sadly, they again proved too strong and our team just missed out on the final. All our girls played with a smile on their face throughout and should be extremely proud of themselves - well done girls!

8th June 2015 - Mini-Tennis

We sent 8 Year 3/4s to the MSN Mini-Tennis event at Writhlington Tennis Centre today for an afternoon of tennis. They played lots of different school and ended up 2nd in their group which is a great achievment. They have practised their skills a lot in the Friday after-school club and this showed that their hard work has paid off. Well done everyone!

4th June 2015 - Too late for The Ashes?

Our Year 5 cricketers impressed hugely this week at the B&NES Kwik Cricket Tournament at The Sulis Club in Bath. We were able to send 2 teams to the event and both teams did fantastically, playing positive cricket throughout. Our Year 5s had been practicing their Kwik Cricket skills in PE last term and were excitied to see what results their hard work would bring!

One of our teams managed to qualify for the quarter finals where they played Paulton Juniors - a school with huge cricketing pedigree. Our team put in a superb performance and were able to knock off the runs needed to reach the semi-finals where they played Widcombe Juniors. Another win came and we reached the final for the first time in a long, long time!

In the final, our team played St Stephens - a team that always does well in this event. Our run chase came down to the last 2 balls and unfortunately we fell short by 6 runs. However, to reach the finals (out of 20 teams) is incredible and now means we qualify for the county finals on the 23rd June! What great news! Well done everyone!

3rd June 2015 - Tri-Golf for Year 3/4

Our Year 3/4s had the chance to represent the school at a Tri-Golf event this week at Farrington Golf Club. The children had to score points for completing a range of challenges, such as hitting a golf buggy with a golf ball and chipping a ball into a bucket!

The team had a great time and performed excellently. Well done to Mia W for finishing joint top out of all the girls there too!

13th May 2015 - Year 5 Cricket Festival

Our Year 5 children had a lovely day in the sunshine this week at the Cricket Festival held at Midsomer Norton Cricket Club. They practised a variety of different skills with children from different schools and had a thoroughly good time!

29th April 2015 - Somervale Football Champions!

Our football team headed to the annual MSN Association Summer Football Tournament this afternoon - on the back of a successful season which saw us win the November Writhlington Event and finish 3rd in the league. With this being the final event of the year, our team were determined to give everything they possibly could to finish the season on a high.

We made a confident start, beating the mighty Westfield 2-0 thanks to goals from Harrison and Owen. Another 2-0 win vs St Benedict's and a 4-0 victory vs St Vigor & St John's ensured safe passage into the semi-finals, where a talented Paulton squad awaited.

After a nervy start, we managed to go ahead thanks to a thunderbolt of a strike from Owen. Our defence played excellently to then keep Paulton at bay, and we ended up claiming a 1-0 win.

In the final, we faced Westfield (again!) who had grown in confidence throughout the tournament. Nothing could separate the teams after normal-time, so an extra period was needed. After a few minutes, Owen broke clear and smashed the ball into the roof of the net to put us 1-0 ahead. Despite surviving a few Westfield chances, the final whistle sounded and we were the champions! 5 wins out of 5 and no goals conceded - can't ask for more than that!

It was a perfect send off for our Year 6s, and a moment we hope they will remember for many years to come. The trophy we received dates back to 1961 and this is the first time our name has appeared on it. What a fantastic end to the season! Well done: William S, Danny, Tianna, Charlie, Harrison, Ioan, Fletcher & Owen.

28th April 2015 - Year 3/4 Gymnastics

We took a team of boys and girls to Writhlington today, to compete in the MSN Association Year 3/4 Gymnastics Event. The event compromised of a floor routine and a vault jump, both being scored by a set of judges. The children had been practising extremely hard during their after-school club, and also at lunchtimes, and were raring to go.

In the Level 1 competition (for gymnasts who particpate less frequently in gymnastics) the team did a fine job in finishing 4th overall. However, in the Level 2 event (for gymnasts who particpate in 2+ hours of gymnastics per week) the team finished in 2nd place - fantastic! Savannah also did particulary well to finish in 2nd place in the Individuals, claiming a lovely Silver medal for her collection. Well done to them all!

23rd April 2015 - Basketball at Wellsway

We participated in the first B&NES Basketball event this week, which was a great opportunity to practise skills in a competitive environment. Our two teams enjoyed the experience and lots of our team members were representing their school at an inter-school sports competitions for the first time; gaining some great experience at that sort of event! Well played all!

22nd April 2015 - Year 3/4 Football Tournament

We sent two teams to the Year 3/4 MSN Association Football Tournament at Somervale this week. They've long been waiting for the chance to represent the school team and didn't let us down when the time came.

Our 'Orange Team' battled against some tough teams in their group, while our 'Yellow Team' managed to progress to the semi-finals with some great results vs Clutton and St Mary's Timsbury. They were eventually defeated by Westfield 3-1 in the semi-finals, but gained some invaluable experience along the way! Well done everyone!

16th April 2015 - Sainsbury's School Games - Spring Finals

In Term 4, we qualified for the hockey, netball and tag rugby county finals through the respective B&NES rounds. This was a great achievement as we were the only team in the West of England to achieve this! On Thursday, our squads travelled to Bristol Grammar School to test themselves against the best schools in the county.

Netball:

Our netballers recovered from a tough opening loss to bounce back with 3 straight wins to put them in a strong position in Pool A. They eventually finished an impressive 10th out of the whole competition. Well done Tianna, Gracie, Jamima, Evie, Lilli, Mel & Lottie!

Rugby:

The rugby squad got off to a positive start with an extremely well fought 4-4 draw in their opening fixture. They improved every game but unfortunately lost their plate knock-out game on a 'Golden Try'. Excellent effort nonetheless Thomas, Leo, Dominic, Owen, Ella, Olivia, Reef, Cooper, Frankie & Harrison!

Hockey:

Our hockey players got off to a flying start, qualifying from their first-round pool in 1st position. This meant they had reached the final 8 but just missed out on the semi-finals by a single goal! How unlucky! They eventually finished 6th overall which is a truly wonderful achievement. Well done Charlie, Ioan, Ben, Megan, Lois & Emily.

Well done to all our players who represented Midsomer Norton Primary School at this event...roll on the Summer County Finals where hopefully we will have some more teams representing us!

27th March 2015 - Upcoming Events in Term 5

Here are a list of the competitions we have entered for Term 5 - to put in your diaries!:

16th April - Hockey Quicksticks (County Finals);

16th April - Netball (County Finals);

16th April - Tag Rugby (County Finals);

22nd April - Y3/4 Football Tournament;

23rd April - Y5/6 Basketball;

28th April - Y3/4 Gymnastics;

29th April - Y5/6 Football Tournament;

18th May - Y5/6 Girls Kwik Cricket.

We are extremely proud to be the only school in the West of England to have 3 teams in the county finals - a great achievement and fair reflection of our commitment to provide excellent sporting opportunities to our children. Go Team MSN!

26th March 2015 - Friendly Football Tournament

We organised a friendly football tournament this week for those children who have yet to represent their school teams. It was a lovely afternoon with some cracking football being played.

Our team played together superbly well to defeat St Johns 2-0, with goals from Ashton and Toby C. They then battled back from 0-3 down to just miss out 2-3 vs Paulton, with 2 more goals from Ashton.

Well done to everyone who took part!

24th/25th March 2015 - Inter-School Badminton Event

We organised a school badminton competition this week for our year 3 & 4 children. The children signed up if they were interested, and then, with the assistance of our Year 6 Sports Leaders, played against each other in singles and doubles.

In the Year 3 event, Archie B claimed the singles title with Charlie B and Mia W winning the doubles. In the Year 4 tournament, Leo and Bradley won their singles pools and Alfie and Charlie won the doubles.

Well done to everyone who took part and especially to our Year 6 Sports Leaders for helping run the event with Mrs Bullock.

24th March 2015 - New Football Kit Arrives

Thanks to the money raised by our football squad at the sleepover back in January, we had the chance to wear our new football kit with pride today. Sadly, our game vs Trinity was cancelled due to the rain but they still looked very smart in school! We look forward to getting lots of use out of the kit in the many years to come!

23rd March 2015 - Another County Qualifier!

Another one of our school teams qualified for the county finals in April today, thanks to our tag rugby squad. They toughed it out against 15 other schools to reach the semi-finals which meant they qualified for the Spring Games in Bristol, joining our hockey and netball squads. Well done everyone and good luck!

18th March 2015 - Puttin' on the Ritz! KS2 Dance Umbrella

Our KS2 dancers finally had the chance to show off their hard-work at the Dance Umbrella performance on Wednesday - and they didn't disappoint.

Their dedication and talent shone through as the wowed the crowd with a tap performance of 'Puttin' on the Ritz'. It was a fabulous event and all the children commented on how they wanted to go straight back on and do it again!

Our thanks go to the children, parents/carers/grandparents, but also to Mrs Carey and Miss Dodington for their commitment into giving the children and experience they will remember for years to come. Well done everyone!

17th March 2015 - Sporting Silhouettes

Y5/6 combined art with PE this week as they took photos of themselves in various sporting positions, and then made a silhouette picture out of black paper and pastels. Very effective!

16th March 2015 - What a Show! Infants Dance Umbrella

Our Infants kicked off Dance Umbrella season in style on Monday - with a sublime performance at The Forum in Bath.

They danced, twirled and shaked their way through their song and did themselves (and their school!) proud with their hard-work and enthusiasm. Congratulations Infants and thanks to all of the parents/carers for helping - and especially to Mrs Boyce and Miss Warcup for their teaching of the dance to the children!

13th March 2015 - Light-Inspired Dance Routines

In the Y5/6 PE sessions this term, we have been composing dance routines inspired by different areas of light - our science topic in Term 4.

From moving like fireflies, arranging our bodies in the shape of a burning fire and working in a group to explode like a firework - we have been focusing on the different levels, speeds and shapes our bodies can make, all to a selection of different musical pieces.

11th March 2015 - The Next Farahs & Radcliffes?!

At the B&NES cross-country event at St Gregs earlier in the year, our girls team finished 1st and boys 3rd - so this event at Somervale was always going to be tough to compete with that. However, our children showed desire, determination, guts and a bag full of bravery to not only match it, but surpass the achievement.

First up were our year 5 girls, who managed to claim FIRST place overall - what a start! Evie C led the way with a fine personal achievement of finishing 2nd out of all the girls. Well done to them all - Evie, Lottie, Lois, Lilli & Charlotte.

Next up were the year 5 boys - who battled to a 3rd place finish overall, with Lewis claiming bronze for his efforts. Cracking stuff boys - Lewis, Ioan, Ashton, William S & Toby C.

And then it was the turn of our year 6s. Our boys fought hard throughout (including a horrible hill half-way round!) with a strong individual performance from Harrison (6th). Our girls matched the earlier efforts of our year 5 girls and also claimed FIRST place - how fantastic! The day was capped off by our own Tianna winning GOLD for the girls race - leading from the first corner til the last. We couldn't be more proud of them all - no matter what place they finished. Y6 boys - Harrison, Charlie, Owen, Ben, Danny, Che, Thomas & Dominic. Y6 girls - Tianna, Jamima, Evie T, Megan, Olivia & Tilly.

Well done to everyone!

6th March 2015 - Badminton BISI Festival

13 of our children headed over to Wellsway today to take part in the B&NES BISI Badminton Festival. They participated in a range of badminton skills and challenges with children from other schools and had some coaching from the staff there. They all had a great time and hopefully are encouraged to continue playing the sport!

5th March 2015 - Football League vs Paulton

Our footballers played some fantastic football in their league match vs Paulton Juniors this week, despite eventually falling to a 4-2 defeat. The team showed great resilience to fight back to 2-2 from being 2-0 down but let in some soft goals to fall behind again. The team knows how well they have done this year by reaching the county finals so won't let a result like this dampen their spirits!

3rd March 2015 - Netballers into County Final

Our netballers put in a sterling performance at Wellsway today to qualify for the West of England County Finals in April. They won 4 out of 5 group games to reach the semi-finals where they finally came unstuck to a strong Saltford team. However, they picked themselves up to defeat Bathwick in the 3rd/4th play off to finish in 3rd place. They are now the 4th of our sporting teams to reach county finals so far this year (football, athletics & hockey) and is yet another positive result for our talented children. Well done girls!

24th February 2015 - Gymnastics @ Writhlington

We sent 10 of our year 5/6 children to Writhlington this afternoon to compete in the annual MSN Association Gymnastics Competition. Due to a change to the date of the event, the girls had only two sessions to learn, practice and perfect a floor routine and vault.  For most of the girls this was their first competition and they were very nervous and excited about performing in front of everyone and a judge. The girls all executed their floor routines brilliantly; smart, tidy and fluent.  They were all so pleased with their performances and received lovely praise from one of the judges.  The two teams came a very credible 4th in the Level 1 routine, and 6th place in the Level 2. Evie T was awarded a bronze medal for her individual performance as well - well done to everyone!

w/c 9th February 2015 - What a Busy Week!

Our children have been extremely busy this week - here are the headlines:

  • Y3 Indoor Football - our boys and girls put in a brave effort at this new event and competed well against some strong opponents.
  • Hockey Quicksticks - we sent 2 teams to the event at Norton Hill this week and both did very well - reaching the quarter and semi-finals. This means we have qualified for the Level 3 Spring School Games in Bath in April. Great job teams!
  • Football league match vs Peasedown - unfortunately our footballers fell to a defeat against Peasedown St John in the league this week. They gave it their best but couldn't find a way past a tough PSJ side. With lots more football to come this year lets hope they get back to their best for the remaining games!

2nd February 2015 - West of England County Athletics

Report by Lucy and Lottie (Earth Class):

"Today the MSN Primary School Athletics Team went to UWE in Bristol to compete in the county Sportshall Athletics final which we qualified from 2 weeks ago. We were competiting against 11 other teams who had qualified from their areas rounds, which meant we were in approximately the top 120 of schools in the West of England. We all had a fantastic time doing our field and relay events. Even if we weren't confident with our event, we gave it out all and cheered on the other athletes. Everyone got more confident when we came 2nd in the first two races, and, as well as being good at the races, we were brilliant in the field events, such as: triple jump, long jump and so on. Mr Andrew also did very well, winning the javelin teachers event with a score of 21m!

When the host announced the result we were nervous, but luckily we finished in 3rd place with an amazing score of 400 points! This meant we are the 3rd best school in the county! We had a fantastic day and are very proud of our achievement."

Upon our return to school, I asked the squad to write some comments about what they were proud of about the day. Here are a selection of their thoughtful responses:

"I was really proud of the javelin because at the start I wasn't sure if I wanted to do it but I got cheered on by my team and I felt a little more confident and did very well;"

"I'm really proud that all the team cheered each other on and stuck together no matter what;"

"I'm proud of the team because we put 100% into everything that we did;"

"The whole team were amazing and no-one gave up;"

"I am really proud of myself because I was really nervous before my event but I kept practising and ended up jumping further than everyone there;"

"I am proud of myself because I beat my personal goal in the chest push."

Congratulations to our whole squad - what a day!

30th January 2015 - ESFA Football County Finals

Our footballers made the long journey to Bridgwater today to take on Somerset's elite squads, thanks to qualifying from the Writhlington tournament back in November. We went hoping to acquit ourselves well but with no real idea of what to expect from the other teams.

We made a fantastic start to the tournament, winning our first 3 games whilst playing some fantastic football against some very tough teams (2-0 vs Yatton, 2-1 vs Bishop Henderson, 1-0 vs Maiden Beech). We stumbled to a 0-0 draw in our next game (vs St Pauls) but finished the group games with a good performance in a 1-0 win vs Eastover. This meant we qualified from our group as the group winners, ensuring we would take part in the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, we played the runners up of Group A - High Down from Bristol. Unfortunately, this was one step too far for our team this year and we were knocked out 2-0 with some truly unlucky goals scored against us. High Down eventually went on to win the tournament so our congratulations go to them.

There were lots of tears at the final whistle but our team showed their true class by still congratulating the opposition and shaking their hands and with the referee. Once our team have had a chance to think about what they have achieved, we hope they realise what a fantastic accomplishment they have completed and how proud everyone associatied with our school is of them. To be one of the top 4 primary schools in Somerset is excellent so well done Team MSN!

28th January 2015 - Swimming Gala

It was the annual MSN Swimming Gala today, so our team headed down to South Wansdyke to compete against 14 other local schools. Our team gave everything they had and we came in a very respectable 6th place out of 15, just 5 points off 2nd place! Excellent work team! We had particular success in a few of the events, winning some lovely medals for the following:

  • GOLD - Jamima - Girls 25m Backstroke;
  • SILVER - Jamima, Lois, Ella & Lilli - Girls Freestyle Relay & Girls Medley Relay;
  • BRONZE - Ella - Girls 25m Breaststroke.

We were also close to the medals in the Girls 25m Freestyle (Lilli - 4th) and the Boys 25m Backstoke (Ben - 4th). Well done to our squad and also a big well done to the runaway winners of the event, Paulton Juniors.

20th January 2015 - Football League Battle vs Westfield

At the start of the competitive game, we went on to the muddy pitch with a winning mentality. Having had not a long warm up, we made a very scrappy start including some poor passing and nervous defending. After a few chances, Westfield finally broke the deadlock with a thunderous strike. Early in the second half, they ran down the pitch, squared it, and found a man in open space to knock it in for 2-0. After silky skills from Charlie, he found his way into the box to strike it in for 2-1. We started playing great football including clever passing and moving. We pushed forward and late on in the game we got a corner. Fletcher crossed it in and Danny ran up and got his first goal for the school with a shot into the top corner to make it 2-2. What a game! (By Charlie and Harrision - Jupiter Class)

14th January 2015 - Sportshall Athletics Triumph!

Our sporting success continued today with our athletics team claiming 1st place at the annual MSN Association Sportshall Athletics event at Norton Hill. The team competed in a variety of events, including:

  • Long jump;
  • Triple jump;
  • Chest push;
  • Vertical jump;
  • Speedbounce;
  • Javelin;
  • And a variety of track events - including obstacle relays and a longer distance 6 lap 'Parlauf'!

The team managed to come out on top with a grand total of a gargantuan 250 points! The team will now progress to the next round of the competition to be held at UWE on the 2nd February. Go team MSN!

10th January 2015 - Paulton Rovers vs St Neots Town

Mr Nockolds, one of our school governers, very kindly arranged for our increasingly successful football team to be guests at the Paulton Rovers vs St Neots Town Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division clash this weekend, due to their success at the first round of the ESFA Cup in November. The children were treated to things such as: meeting the squad, having a look around the clubs facilities, having a kick around on the pitch, leading the team out as mascots, watching the game from the main stand & selecting and presenting the Man of the Match award. They all had a great day and left with many good memories of the visit! Our thanks go to Mr Nockolds for arranging it, but also the players and staff of Paulton Rovers for being so accommodating and welcoming to us all!

You can catch a radio interview with some of the squad and Mr Andrew on the following link (skip to approx 49mins): Click here.

6th January 2015 - Football Friendly vs High Littleton

Our football team had an entertaining warm-up match vs High Littleton today, eventually coming through a tough start to claim a 8-2 victory. The squad played some fantastic stuff in the end, and came off feeling very good about themselves! Well done to those footballers!

25th November 2014 - Handball Taster Session

We were lucky enough to welcome a representative from 'Premier Sports' today, to introduce some KS2 pupils to the fast and furious game of handball! The children loved the 30 minute session that they had and the aim is to set up an after-school handball club in the summer term - watch this space!

24th November 2014 - Second Place For Our Girls!

Our girls did their whole school proud this evening at the Writhlington Tournament. Out of their 6 games, they went undefeated - winning 3 and drawing 3. They finished in 2nd place and missed out on the title by just 1 point! So close! Their results are listed here:

vs Peasedown St John (drew 1-1);

vs St Johns MSN (won 2-0);

vs High Littleton (won 6-0);

vs Westfield (won 4-0);

vs Trinity (drew 1-1);

vs Paulton (drew 0-0).

All of the girls should be immensely pleased with how they performed throughout the event - they made their parents and teachers very proud. Well done girls!

17th November 2014 - Writhlington Champions!

Our football team put on a superb show tonight to win the MSN Association Large School Tournament at Writhlington School. From the first whistle to the last, our team stood up and made themselves counted with some tough battling and neat inter-play. They showed impeccable sportsmanship throughout, enjoyed themselves, and came home with a trophy - is there a better combination?! Our results are listed below:

vs Peasedown St John (won 4-0);

vs Academy of Trinity (won 2-1);

vs Paulton Juniors (won 4-2);

vs Westfield (won 3-1);

vs St Johns MSN (won 3-1).

Because of the victory, we now have qualified to represent B&NES at the country finals on the 30th January. We are sure our squad will enjoy the experience and continue to do their school proud!

14th November 2014 - Netball Success - Part II

Due to a rule change at the Somervale Netball Tournament (only girls being allowed to play from this year), we entered a team into a local mixed competition at Wellsway School today, in which a couple of our boys from our successful netball squad from last year were eligible to play. The team competed very well and finished in 2nd place overall - a wonderful achievement! Well done to them all, and with 2 more tournaments to come this school year we hope they have as much fun and success at them as they have done so far!

13th November 2014 - Sports Leaders

As part of our aim to increase the amount of physical activity our children experience each week, we have started training some year 6s up to take an active role in leading activities aimed towards our younger school members. The training sessions, led by Mrs Bullock, started last week and take place on a Thursday morning before school (for 6 weeks) for the select children. Our Sports Leaders have already started planning their own activities and are looking forward to putting them into practice after Christmas, where they will be leading small groups of children in physical activities during lunchtime.

6th November 2014 - Girls Football Debut

Our girls football team made their debut this season with a fine performance vs Paulton Juniors, which we won 2-0. It has been a pleasure running our girls football club this year, where we have had 20 children attend each week, and they really enjoyed the experience of playing a match against another school. With the MSN Association Girls Football Tournament coming up in a few weeks, who knows what they could achieve...

5th November 2014 - Netball Festival

Hot on the heels of our netball success yesterday, we took 28 year 5/6 children over to Somervale today to take part in the Netball Festival for local schools. The session was run by children from Somervale School working towards their Sports Leaders certification, and our children really enjoyed the chance to practise their skills and have some fun!

4th November 2014 - B&NES Netball Qualifiers

Our netball team did themselves proud today by entering the MSN Association High 5 Netball Tournament at Somervale. They showed great team spirit to finish 3rd out of 12 teams, winning 5 out of the 6 games they competed in. Because the team finished 3rd, they now qualify for the B&NES area tournament in March. Well done and good luck girls!

25th October 2014 - County Cross Country

It was a pleasure to be able to go and cheer on our county cross country qualifiers in Bristol this Saturday - and they showed great mental and physical strength to overcome a frankly scary course! Their family supporters and I were extremely proud of them and it was a great experience for our budding Farahs and Paveys!

16th October 2014 - Football League Kick Off

On Thursday, MSN Primary played a football match vs St Johns school. The weather conditions while we were playing were awful and it poured down during the match! We managed to win 6-2 but it was a close game. Lewis scored 3 of the goals, his first ones of the season. Charlie also scored 3 goals including a well taken penalty in the second half (which he won himself). We had more chances to score later on with a diving header from Ioan and Harrison hit the post but everybody played well and enjoyed themselves! (By Danny and Ioan - Jupiter class).

6th October 2014 - Netball Warm-Up

Our netballers have a tournament next week at Somervale, and warmed up for it in the best possible way with a win in a friendly match vs Paulton Juniors this afternoon. The girls showed great teamwork and communication on the way to victory - but most of all had a great amount of fun!

Good luck next week girls!

2nd October 2014 - Silver Award

Following an application from us over the summer, we are pleased to announce that we have been awarded the Sainsbury's School Games Silver Mark. This award reflects many things to do with our PE provision in school, including:

  • The quantity of high-quality PE lessons our children receive each week;
  • The amount of children participating in extra-curricular sporting activity each week;
  • The support we provide for our talented young sports people and less active children;
  • The number of competitive events we take part in each year.

We are very proud of this award and hope it can be used as a springboard to develop our PE teaching even more!

1st October 2014 - Cross Country Heroes!

The start of our inter-school competitions started today, and what a start it was! At the B&NES Cross Country event (which saw over 20 schools and 300 competitors take part), our brilliant boys came 3rd in the team event which was fantastic! However, our glorious girls performed magnificently and came in 1st place overall! We, at Midsomer Norton, are so proud of everyone who took part in representing the school and could not have asked for more commitment and enthusiasm.

The top 20 individual finishers in each event have qualified to represent Bath and North East Somerset in the county event on the 25th October. We are extremely proud to announce that we have six children who have achieved this. They are: Harrison, Lewis, Megan, Evie, Jamima & Lois.

We are sure that this is just the start of what promises to be an extremely successful year of sport at Midsomer Norton Primary School - so we hope there is lots more news to bring you throughout the year!

June 2014 - Football Champions!

Well done to both our year 3/4 and year 5/6 football teams who both brought home some silverware from the Midsomer Norton Games Association football tournaments over the past few weeks.

Our year 5/6 team reached the final where they unfortunately came unstuck against a very strong Westfield team 1-0 in the final after extra time.

However our year 3/4 team went all the way and defeated Peasedown St John 4-1 in the final! Well done to all the children from all the schools who took part!
